Chapter 4

Examining school mobile app life-cycle cost

Whether you choose a provider that bundles a mobile app with other solutions or you go with one that’s offered as a standalone, determining the true cost of creating a mobile app for your school can be tricky.

Review the cost centers for mobile apps

Adding up school mobile app costs

Beyond initial development costs, there are several cost centers that need to be factored into the life cycle cost of your app:

  • Once the app is ready to go, you have to promote the use of the app or else it is sure to fail. Factor in costs (mostly human resources) involved in fully promoting app usage.
  • Consider your provider’s reputation and track record in web communications. If you’ve a standalone app provider without the ability to look at the big picture of your web communications, there are likely going to be some ‘coordination’ costs, both internal and external, to make your app work.
  • The upgrades to keep pace with operating system updates and new mobile devices requires updates to your mobile app. How much will those cost your school?
  • On-going basic support of your mobile app moving forward should be factored into arriving at the total cost of implementing a mobile app.

How well your website engages your school community depends on how well it works with all your digital channels.

Involve school leadership in communications

Given the prominent role of website and digital communications, it's a good idea to have a high-ranking administrator or two on your website/communications team. You may already have a committee in place. Get your superintendent or principal to participate because your website should reflect school leadership.
